The New York Yankees returned to the World Series after being swept by the Cincinnati Reds the previous year.

He was named World Series MVP for the second time in his career, matching his performance in the 1973 World Series with the Oakland Athletics. In the eighth inning of Game 5, however, Yankees manager Billy Martin called on Jackson to pinch hit – and Jackson delivered a run-scoring single that cut the Royals’ lead to 3-2 and led to New York’s eventual 5-3 win. But in the American League championship series against the Royals, Jackson slumped and was eventually benched to start the deciding fifth game after recording just one hit in 14 at-bats in the first four games. Jackson’s three-homer game put an end to a season of turmoil that began when he left Baltimore for New York via free agency following the 1976 campaign. With a tumultuous clubhouse throughout the 1977 season, the Yankees thrived and Jackson hit 32 home runs and drove in 110 runs as New York won 100 games and the American League East title. In the second, New York’s Chris Chambliss smacked a home run to score Jackson (who had reached on a four-pitch walk) tying up the ball game at 2-2.

The series went six games, with the Yankees handing manager Billy Martin his only championship as skipper of the Yankees. Rhoden, a good hitting pitcher, hit a ground-rule double to left, and Davey Lopes followed with a two-run homer off Yankee starter Ron Guidry. The Dodgers scored nothing else off Guidry, as he pitched a four-hit complete game. In extra innings, the Yankees got their leadoff hitters on in both the tenth and eleventh innings but did not score due to failure to lay down sacrifice bunts.

The 1977 Series was the first World Series televised by the ABC network since 1949 and the first since television of the Series started in 1947 not to be televised, at least in part, by rival network NBC. NBC had been the exclusive television network of the Series from 1950 to 1976 and had covered that year's Yankees–Royals and Dodgers–Phillies playoff series that year. As was customary at the time, the competing teams' local flagship stations were allowed to air a simulcast of ABC's national broadcast.

The Pirates jumped out to 4-0 lead in the second inning, but the Yankees battled back to take a 5-4 lead in the sixth and extend it to 7-4 in the top of the eighth. Pittsburgh roared back with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 9-7 lead, but New York tied the game in the top of the ninth. Then in the bottom, Mazeroski was the first up and hit the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” to left field on the second pitch to win the Series for the Pirates. It remains the only home run to win Game 7 of a World Series.
